CTR Group is seeking a Manual Machinist - Journeyman Machinist for the Machine Shop of a Nationwide Mechanical Repair Company in the Newport News, VA.

Pay Range: $30 - $35 per Hour and Benefits:

SUMMARY:

We are seeking an experienced Manual Machinist / Journeyman Machinist to join our skilled team. In this role, you’ll use conventional machine tools to repair, fabricate, and rebuild critical components like shafts, valves, flanges, and electric motors. You’ll work from blueprints, repair specs, or part samples, using precision instruments and good judgment to deliver accurate, reliable parts every time.

The Manual/Journeyman Machinist is responsible for, but not limited to, the following machining and mechanical tasks:

• Perform Machining and Fabrication
• Operate manual machines including mills, lathes, grinders, and saws
• Machine new and replacement parts for equipment based on drawings or part samples
• Drill, tap, and modify parts to tight tolerances
• Create and modify fixtures or tooling for repeat work
• Achieve surface finishes appropriate for sealing or rotational assemblies
• Mechanical Repair and Assembly
• Rebuild and repair electric motors (up to 100 HP), valves, air compressors, and pumps
• Replace bearings, seals, and bushings on rotating components
• Set rotor clearances and align shafts
• Repair or fabricate damaged or worn parts for reuse
• Diagnose and test pressure controls and mechanical assemblies
• Inspection and Quality
• Use precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators) to ensure accuracy
• Interpret and apply tolerances from blueprints or sample parts
• Perform visual and dimensional inspections for quality assurance

REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 5+ years of manual machining or journeyman machinist experience
• Proficient in reading blueprints and mechanical drawings
• Skilled in using measuring equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
• Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand, bend, twist, and kneel throughout the shift
• Must be dependable, self-driven, and have a strong work ethic
• Must pass background check and comply with our drug-free workplace policy

Preferred Qualifications

• Trade school certification or formal millwright/machinist apprenticeship
• Experience with pump, boiler, or HVAC components
• Welding or fabricating skills (MIG, TIG, stick)
• Electrical/mechanical troubleshooting experience
