Summary:

As an integral part of the Hot Springs Village leadership team, this position manages the technical agronomy programming for all courses, directly supervising course superintendents and providing support for their specific agronomy programs, plans, financial metrics, staff, and operational standards. Implements sound agronomic programs most appropriate for Arkansas weather/climate conditions and course type, while working within HSV fiscal parameters and directives.

Essential Duties:
  1. Develop, train, coach, review, discipline, and mentor department managers, providing feedback, direction, and ongoing communication so that they may carry out the daily activities necessary to achieve operational excellence at each course.
  2. Provides ongoing leadership and insight in the areas of budgets, the agronomy planner, capital and business plans, fertility worksheets, goals, and staff performance reviews.
  3. Maintains a clear understanding of and brings awareness to the Agronomy standards appropriate for each course, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory standards/laws and Hot Springs Village policies and procedures.
  4. Develops budgets and capital plans, provides timely and accurate reporting of all financial and non-financial information, monitors business volume forecast, and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, and budgeted costs or essential expenses.
  5. Evaluates and continually sources vendors to ensure course personnel utilize the purchasing power commanded by an 8-course operation, ensuring the highest quality at the lowest cost in accordance with Hot Springs Village purchasing and bidding policies.
  6. Ensures that they and their team obtain proper training and/or licenses needed to perform job tasks safely and within city, state, and federal regulations. Addresses directly all real or perceived environmental concerns.
  7. Stays abreast of current industry practices.
  8. Maintains ongoing awareness of all golf courses conditions and provides constant feedback and direction to Golf Course Superintendents.
  9. Ensures effective communication and supportive relationships with other departments, especially Golf Operations, so members and guests achieve the highest possible level of service and overall golfing experience, offering support in the areas of agronomy programs and plans, budgeting, and staffing needs.
  10. Conducts regular site visits to all courses to interact with key staff and ensure compliance with established standards, regulatory requirements, purchasing practices, and personnel policies.
  11. Assures that effective orientation and training are given to each new employee. Develops ongoing training programs.
  12. Models, trains, and uphold safe work practices.
  13. Regular and reliable attendance.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (BA) in turf grass management or related field preferred; seven to ten years related experience, with a minimum of three years supervising others; or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient for a multi-course facility.

Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turf grass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices, and methods; and a thorough understanding of course playability standards.

Physical Demands:

Occasionally stands and walks; climbs or balances; tastes or smells. Regularly sits, uses hands; reaches with arms and hands. Frequently talks or hears. Regularly lifts to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds.

Environment/Noise:

Regularly works in extreme heat (non-weather); may meet fumes or airborne particles as well as toxic or caustic chemicals; may experience vibration. Occasionally may work in wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and near moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock. Frequently works in outdoor weather conditions. The noise level is moderate to loud.

Certificates/Licenses:

State Pesticide Applicator License preferred, Valid Driver’s License required.

  • Ability to motivate and inspire personnel towards Hot Springs Village goals and initiatives.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents, such as contracts and specifications.
  • Ability to write professional reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups and one on one.
  • Ability to read and speak English may be required in order to perform the duties of the job (e.g., the associates may be required to communicate with English-speaking customers or co-workers, the manuals for the equipment the associates may use are in English).
  • Ability to calculate amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
